What is a medicare supplement?

A medicare supplement plan or medigap plan is a supplemental insurance policy that pays a portion or all of your medicare part A and part B out of pocket expenses. There are 12 Arizona medicare supplement plans lettered A-L that are standardized by CMS . This means that if you choose plan F, your coverage will be the same no matter which company you chose to purchase your medigap policy from.  Your Arizona medicare supplement plan is separate from medicare part a and b and is only there to pay what your portion of the bill is. Arizona medigap plans  E,G and J do offer some additional benefits like at home recovery, and preventative care. Approximately 85% percent of Arizona medicare supplement policy owners choose plan F because they find it has the best balance between coverage, benefits and monthly premium.

8 Things Eeryone should know when buying a medicare supplement plan.

  • Generally, you must have Parts A and B to buy an  Arizona medicare supplement .
  • You pay a monthly premium for your  medicare supplement  policy to the private insurer, and you pay your monthly Part B premium. See page 119.
  • A medigap policy only covers one person. If you and your spouse both want medigap coverage , you each must buy separate medigap policies.
  • It is important to compare policies becuase the costs can vary with different levels of coverage and premium increases can vary from company to company. Work with an experienced agent who can inform you of this information.
  • The best time to buy an Arizona medicare supplement  policy is during your open enrollment period that begins 6 months before the month in which you are 65 and enrolled in Part B. (Some states have additional open enrollment periods.)
  • After this initial enrollment period, your option to buy a Arizona medigap policy may be limited.
  • If you are under age 65, you may have additional rights to buy a medicare supplement , depending on the laws in your state.
  • If you have a medigap policy and join a medicare advantage plan (like an HMO or PPO), your medicare supplement policy can’t be used to pay your medicare advantage Plan copayments and deductibles.

Who needs an Arizona medicare supplement?

Anyone who is currently a medicare beneficiary. You can enroll in an Arizona medicare supplement whether you are on medicare disability or traditional medicare for those who are 65+. All you need is to be currently enrolled in medicare part a and part b to qualify for an Arizona medigap plan . If you are not in your open enrollement period, which is six months before and after your 65th birthday or date of enrollment in medicare, then you will have to also qualify medically.

When can I enroll in an Arizona medicare supplement plan?

You can enroll in an Arizona medigap plan at any time, however the best time to enroll is during your open enrollment period. Your open enrollment period starts 6 months before your 65th birthday (or your medicare enrollment date) and ends 6 months after your 65th birthday (or your medicare enrollment date). During this open enrollment period you can enroll in any Arizona medicare supplement plan on a garuanteed issue basis. This means that when you are in your OEP the insurance company must accept you regardless of your past medical history. You may still enroll and change plans even after your initial open enrollment period however you will then need to qualify through medical underwritting. Do not mistake your medicare supplement open enrollment period with your medicare part D annual election period from November 15th - December 31st. Your medicare part d annual election period has nothing to do with your medicare supplement open enrollment period.
